RSO-MRF Syllabus: Complete Topic-Wise Breakdown

The full syllabus for the AERB RSO Certification for Medical Radiation Facilities (RSO-MRF) exam, organized into the 15 official topics — the same structure we've used to build our topic-wise mock test series.

AERB / RP&AD, BARC 15 topics Written + Viva-voce

The RSO-MRF syllabus is prescribed by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) and forms the basis for the certification exam conducted by the Radiological Physics and Advisory Division (RP&AD), BARC. Every question in our RSO-MRF mock test series is mapped to one of the 15 topics below, so you can practice exactly the areas where you need it most.

The 15 topics

Topic 1

Basic Radiation Physics

Atomic structure, isotopes and radioisotopes, general properties of alpha, beta, and gamma rays, laws of radioactivity, half-life, decay constant, radioactive equilibrium, and production of radioisotopes by neutron and charged-particle bombardment.

Topic 2

Interaction of Radiation with Matter

How charged particles, X-rays/gamma rays, and neutrons interact with matter — scattering, ionisation, the photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, pair production, attenuation coefficients, and shielding materials.

Topic 3

Basic X-Ray Physics

Production and properties of X-rays, characteristics of diagnostic and therapeutic tubes, filtration and beam quality, and the technology behind modern X-ray tubes and electron accelerators.

Topic 4

Radiation Quantities and Units

Fluence, LET, Kerma, absorbed dose, equivalent dose, effective dose, collective effective dose, Annual Limit of Intake (ALI), Derived Air Concentration (DAC), and related dosimetric quantities.

Topic 5

Radiation Dosimetry

Absorbed dose, Kerma and exposure under Charged Particle Equilibrium (CPE), ionization chambers, Bragg-Gray cavity theory, TLDs, calorimeters, chemical dosimeters, and beam/source dosimetry. Read our full dosimetry guide →

Topic 6

Radiation Detection and Measurement

Gas-filled detectors, ionization chambers, proportional and GM counters, scintillation and semiconductor detectors, TLD/OSL dosimeters, and the full range of survey meters, area monitors, and counting/spectrometry instruments used in the field.

Topic 7

Radiation Biology

Interaction of radiation with cells, chromosome aberrations, stochastic and deterministic effects, acute radiation sickness, radiation carcinogenesis, radiobiological basis of radiotherapy, and linear-quadratic modelling.

Topic 8

Diagnostic Radiology

Physical principles of X-ray diagnosis, fluoroscopy, CT scanners, digital subtraction angiography, mammography, interventional radiology, patient dose optimization, and quality assurance in diagnostic radiology.

Topic 9

Nuclear Medicine

Clinical radioisotope laboratories, SPECT and PET, radioisotope scanners and cameras, cyclotron-produced radionuclides, radioimmunoassay, ¹³¹I therapy, and quality assurance in nuclear medicine.

Topic 10

Radiotherapy

Teletherapy and brachytherapy units, output calibration, LDR/MDR/HDR/PDR brachytherapy, remote afterloading units, treatment planning systems, IMRT/IGRT, and quality assurance in radiotherapy.

Topic 11

Radiation Protection Standards

ICRP recommendations, international and national radiation protection standards (ICRP, BSS, AERB), categories of exposure, and dose limits for occupational workers, the general public, comforters, and trainees. Read our full radiation protection guide →

Topic 12

Radiation Hazard Evaluation and Control

Time-distance-shielding principles, shielding calculation parameters (workload, use factor, occupancy factor), primary/secondary barriers, and shielding design for X-ray, telecobalt, accelerator, and brachytherapy installations.

Topic 13

Disposal of Radioactive Waste

Classification of radioactive waste, treatment techniques for solid/liquid/gaseous effluents, permissible disposal limits, and waste management practices specific to medical radiation facilities.

Topic 14

Transport of Radioactive Material

Regulatory aspects of transporting radioactive material — package design and testing, transport documentation, TREM cards, and the responsibilities of the consignor during routine, normal, and accident scenarios.

Topic 15

Regulatory Aspects for Medical Radiation Facilities

National legislation, the AERB regulatory framework, licensing/inspection/enforcement, and the responsibilities of the employer, licensee, RSO, technologist, and radiation workers under Indian regulation.
